AD Kids - Just what is best?

Just what is best?
But this head-turning new model of early childhood often leaves parents confused about what’s best for their very young child. Many parents I speak with wonder if they should buy the latest learning tools that promise to make their infants into Superbabies or to turn their toddlers and preschoolers into little Einsteins.
The good news is you don’t need expensive toys, videos, flashcards or CDs to build your baby’s brain. A caring parent or caregiver can find many “teachable moments” in the everyday play of babies, toddlers and preschoolers. And summer offers the perfect time to begin.

What Is Normal?
The occasional repetition of syllables or words once or twice (li-li-like this), the use of hesitancies and the use of fillers such as “uh,” “er” and “um” are signs that a child is learning to use his language skills in new ways, according to Dr. Guitar and Dr. Conture.
These “disfluencies” occur most often between ages 1 and 5 years, and they tend to come and go. If they disappear for several weeks, then return, the child may just be going through another stage of learning.

AD Kids: Waving Bye-Bye
For the first time, baby may be able to follow a simple instruction such as ‘Wave bye-bye,’ ‘Bring me the teddy bear,’ ‘Stop that’ or ‘Kiss me.’ This shows that your baby has learned not only separate words and their meanings but can understand a whole idea expressed in words. This is an important milestone in language development, and it is a good sign that your baby will be talking before you know it.

Music Classes for Mom and Baby
It was my own instinct to sing to my baby (but not really knowing what to sing) that led me to enroll in The Music Class, a nationwide franchise of mommy-baby music classes, when my daughter was just 4 months old. If I had ever needed evidence that music is one of the basic human pleasures, this class provided it in spades.
The moms and kids, who ranged from 4 months to 4 years, sang, danced, learned a little about the music, and got to see some great instruments up close — tubas, violins, flutes, African drums, and a harp, among others. The class leader gave us a songbook and a CD for home listening and we wore them both out. We also learned finger plays to do together at home. My daughter was enchanted.

About AD Kids Inc: You’ll have to reevaluate these precautionary measures as your child grows. “Remember,” says Altman, “childproofing is an ongoing process: The gate you put at the top of the stairs for your 1-year-old may become her favorite climbing structure when she’s 2.”
Be careful when you have visitors, too. No matter how carefully you’ve childproofed the house, great-aunt Jane has probably not applied your standards to her purse. Aspirin and other items that people typically carry with them are dangerous to small children.
Use caution with furniture and fixtures
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, from 1982 to 1986, hospital emergency rooms treated about 4,880 injuries to children caused by chests of drawers, TVs, and bookcases tipping over; 11 children under 5 died in these accidents.
Large and/or heavy objects in your home are real hazards — bolt whatever you can to the wall with L-brackets, and push items like televisions back from the edge or move them out of reach. Children start pulling up on things shortly after they start crawling. And when they learn how to climb, watch out. Some kids will scale counters, bookcases, and anything else they can get a grip on.
About David Laurino
‘I…milk!’ my eldest son would say at about three years old, meaning of course, ‘I want milk.’ It’s hard to believe now that my articulate 10-year-old son was once diagnosed with a speech delay. At the time, however, I found it pretty traumatic when I saw his ability to vocalize lagging far behind his friends. At age two, his peers were forming two-word sentences while I was desperately writing a list of four or five words my son seemed to understand and pronounce.
My experience is not uncommon: In Ontario alone, 10 percent of children have some sort of speech or language delay. These range from sound substitution (making a t sound instead of a k, for instance) to being unable to use or understand language. How a given delay is treated depends both on the specific problem and its underlying cause.

Memory For A Good Game of Peek-a-Boo!
The game ‘Peek-a-Boo’ wouldn’t be possible without this idea of object permanence! A baby laughs and squeals when Daddy’s face reappears from behind his hands, because she’s beginning to realize that he’s still there, even when he’s out of sight. Babies who’ve mastered ‘Peek-a-Boo’ have probably caught on to the idea of object permanence.

In order to help your baby learn, it’s important to repeat the activity regularly. “Babies learn through repetition,” says Morey. She suggests doing the same activity every day, gradually building on it by altering the activity as Baby develops and is ready to do more. Try making a ritual out of it by playing the game at the same time every day as part of another activity. Maybe you always play peek-a-boo while changing diapers, or maybe you play during bath time. “Rituals are really important with children because they allow the child to feel safe,” says Morey.
Knowing when your child is ready for certain games is also important. Sometimes you can over-stimulate babies by doing activities they are developmentally not ready for. Signs of over-stimulation include crying, falling asleep or turning the head away. You can learn age-appropriate activities by reading books, attending infant development classes or even surfing online.
But no matter what you do, make sure it’s fun for you and your baby. Playing games will help the two of you share an even closer bond. “It is a special bonding time with the parent,” says Rosenblum. “There are so many things to do with your child, and when you see that first smile, laugh and them trying to imitate a game, it is so rewarding.”
